Soumya was born in India to a family of theatre activists and has been involved in theatre since her childhood. She has acted in and directed many plays throughout her student days. She has worked with a number of eminent theatre directors like BV Karanth, Akshara, Jambe and Magasaysay award winner KV Subbanna. She organized and ran the theatre club for her college, before joining the Ninasam Theater Institute for her Diploma in Theatre Arts. Graduating with distinction, she has put her training to excellent use teaching drama to young groups and directing plays for various amateur theatre groups in south India.Notable among them are productions of Antigone, A Midsummer Nights Dream, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Twelfth Night, Wizard of Oz, Medea, Ulysses and House of Bernarda Alba, which have been lauded by critics and audience alike. Some of her directorial efforts have won prestigious State level awards like the Ullal and Umesh Rudra awards. Her latest work, Rudali was featured in the Young Directors Festival organised by the National School of Drama. Her productions are noted for their mature interpretation, intensity and attention to detail.
